I am an interdisciplinary artist and art educator. My creative process involves experimenting with art forms of photography, illustration, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and calligraphy. 

Photography was my entry into artistic expression. The goal in those early days was to archive the details of my transformation as a teenager as well as my family’s new life in America. Photography became the means to collect our memories as arrivals in a new country.

My work later evolved to showcase the nexus of my sexual traumas, immigrant traumas, existentialism, geopolitics, and gender politics through the lens of distorted language. One of the harsh realities of immigration was, and continues to be, the loss of my native Farsi and not quite articulating myself in English. I navigate this disillusionment through visual mediums. Early works experimented with various configurations of Persian letters and calligraphy through handmade stencils and watercolor to create prints I refer to as “calligraforms.” These forms are visual vocabulary representing gestures, feelings, and states of being that I can’t quite put into words in any of my spoken languages. I expanded my practice using acrylic on canvas to create landscapes where the calligraforms interact, move, and narrate scenes.

In the last 7 years I found my voice by reworking traditional calligraphy into abstract figurative calligaforms to accurately reflect my thoughts and feelings, which I hope to continue in painting, and use in other mediums like ceramics and sculpture.
